FIA IDR ASN Guide

FIA IDR  information for FIA ASNs

An Introduction to IDR

The FIA IDR is a small and lightweight electronic device with a microchip sensor. it is fitted in a vehicle’s cockpit to accurately measure vehicle incident impact data. IDR is low cost, it is simple to fit and requires no maintenance in its 2 year lifespan. IDR has been developed to collect big data, allowing the FIA to learn more about impacts and gain knowledge of accident types.

By identifying incident trends and gaining in-depth incident data we will achieve safer racing at all levels.

If you are interested in trailing the IDR technology within your ASN, please contact the FIA Safety department.

FIA Impact Data Recorder (IDR) System Overview

R

The system is a package of an impact data recorder (IDR) and mobile phone application.

R

The IDR device is small, lightweight and durable, with a two year, maintenance free lifespan. It records and stores x, y, z acceleration data.

R

The IDR is simply installed in a vehicle cockpit and records all high G impacts over a set threshold.

R

When a vehicle with an IDR installed is involved in an accident the impact data can be downloaded by a race official scanning the QR on the IDR to download the impact data via the IDR App.

R

The race official can then use the app to add supplementary information to the accident report, such as, photos, notes and medical notes before submitting the accident and impact report to the owning ASN via a secure cloud server.

R

The ASN receives the accident report and are then able to analyse the data to help identify any trends or safety hazards.

R

Through the collection of big data using the system, ASNs and the FIA will be able to identify impact trends and gain real world impact insight to improve safety in motorsport.

IDR Mobile App Overview

The IDR is part of a system that includes a secure access mobile application for officials, allowing impact data to be downloaded from the IDR by race officials’, stored securely on a cloud server and then distributed to the owning ASN.

The App allows the race official to not only download the impact data, but also submit supplementary information such as: driver details; vehicle details; incident photographs and additional information. In the background the app timestamps the report and records the geolocation of the accident. The reporting functionality offered by the app allows the ASN to gain a better perspective of every incident through more thorough incident Reporting and accompanying impact information, all being held in one database.
